- The top of the oval was ringed with bleachers. Gregor's eyes traveled up the distant rows of people as he tried to find the ceiling. Instead, he found the athletes. A dozen bats were slowly spiraling around the top of the arena. They ranged in color from light yellow to black. Gregor guessed the smallest one had a wing-span of about fifteen feet.

Gregor the Overlander (Underland Chronicles #1)
This irresistible first novel tells the story of a quiet boy who embarks on a dangerous quest in order to fulfill his destiny -- and find his father -- in a strange world beneath New York City.
When Gregor falls through a grate in the laundry room of his apartment building, he hurtles into the dark Underland, where spiders, rats, cockroaches coexist uneasily with humans. This world is on the brink of war, and Gregor's arrival is no accident. A prophecy foretells that Gregor has a role to play in the Underland's uncertain future. Gregor wants no part of it -- until he realizes it's the only way to solve the mystery of his father's disappearance. Reluctantly, Gregor embarks on a dangerous adventure that will change both him and the Underland forever.

Then, in the middle of an ordinary day, Gregor is swept off to an underworld land with his baby sister, Boots. In this world, Gregor is invited by the Underland humans, to fulfill a prophecy that will save their civilization as well as provide Gregor answers from his father’s disappearance. Gregor must fight with the courage of a warrior against a world full of giant cockroaches, bats, and evil rats.
Rationale:
- Most of the books being taught currently in 5th grade classrooms are contingent on adventure and character maturation. In this novel, there is a surplus of both of these elements. Gregor is thrust into an adventurous quest that provides students with fast-paced action scenes as well as quiet strategy scenes. Gregor himself goes through character development that is admirable by educators and parents alike. Gregor is thrust into a world of responsibility, unlikely friendship, a battle of trusts, and finally finding his purpose in life. All of these elements are substantial themes to provide students in their literary repertoire. Along with providing students with this novel, it is also the first of a series, so by introducing students to this book, you will be introducing them into a series that will keep them reading! This book is recent, relevant, and will, without a doubt, capture the hearts of your students as well as your own.
