Have you received a docx file but don’t know how to open it?
Open the XML file in your new program. Many XML programs will set themselves as the default program for XML files, allowing you to simply double-click the XML file to open it. If you can't, right-click the XML file and select 'Open With.' Browse for your newly-installed program. FYI: When opening a file, select XML Files from the File type drop down list. This will filter all your files and only show files saved as XML. Files saved in Word as XML are part of the new Open XML 2.0 which Microsoft introduced recently. Hi Allison, Yes first I had read them. Anyway I called Trados Turkey and they told me the solution. I just need to save docx document as doc (going one or two versions back to eliminate compatibility issues) and setup the project again with the same TM. Hi,I keep getting this message when trying to open a word. It told me 'Unable to open Open XML file pdge.docx. Problems were detected in the content, or the file name may contain invalid character (for example, /). Details: Can not open file. The file is corrupt.' But i can open it on another mac, same office.
Docx is the default file extension in Microsoft Office Word 2007, 2010, and 2013. To open docx files, you need to have one of those versions of Word, the compatibility pack, or a Word viewer installed on your computer.
These instructions work for docx and docm files, but you will not be able to open dotx and dotm files unless you are running Word 2007, 2010, or 2013.
Click the statement that best describes your set up. The link takes you to a short tutorial:
- I have a previous version of Word installed (link opens new page)

Opening a docx file with Word
Do you already have Microsoft Word 2007, 2010, or 2013 installed? Just double-click the file icon to open and edit the file. If you still can’t open the document, read the troubleshooting tips on this page for help.
If you don’t have one of the newer versions of Word installed, you can download the Microsoft Word free trial, then use it to open the docx file. If you don’t want to download the free trial, see How to Open docx files Without Word.
Troubleshooting
Sometimes you cannot open docx files even if you have the correct version of Word (or the compatibility pack or viewer) installed.
Try these troubleshooting steps if you can’t open a docx file with Word or after installing the compatibility pack, and you need to recover your data.
Password-protected Word documents
If a pop-up window appears asking for a password, you will not be able to open the file without first entering the correct password.
A Word document password is encrypted so you won’t be able to crack it. You will have to get the password from the author of the file. Is this your own file but you forgot the password? Well, you are out of luck unless you have an unencrypted version in a backup file or attached to an email. Try searching online… there are programs available that can sometimes recover the password.
Tip: Always write down the password somewhere, even if you think you will remember it.
The Word file will not open
If the file will not open, it may have an incorrect file extension, or it may be corrupted.
Sometimes people type in the wrong extension when saving a file. Try changing the extension from docx to doc or vice-versa to see if it will open. (You might also want to try docm, dotx, or dotm.)
Didn’t work? Try a repair.
Open and Repair a Corrupted Word document
Pulse download mac. You can repair a file while opening it by following this procedure:
- Open Word 2007.
- Click the Office Button.
- Click Open.
- Under File Name, browse to and select the file.
- Click the small arrow on the right side of the Open button. Select Open and Repair from the drop-down list.
- If the file is repairable, Word will repair and open it.
Remember to save the file before closing it or the repair will be lost.
If the repair does not work and you have tried changing the extension, there is a work-around that should enable you to extract the text from the file.
The “Unzip a Word File ” hack
Data recovery can be a time-consuming task. If you are in a hurry and just need the text from a damaged file, try this hack:

Problem
When Office 365 users try to open or view attachments in email messages in Outlook Web App, they experience the following symptoms:
- In Office 365, the attachment isn't displayed in the message. Instead, a generic placeholder, such as '1 Attachment' is displayed, and this can't be opened.
- When users try to view attachments in Office 365, they receive the following error message: Access to attachments has been blocked. Blocked attachments: <FileName>.
Cause
This issue occurs if the attachment is blocked by Outlook Web App. By default, Outlook Web App blocks attachments that have the following file name extensions:
vsmacros, msh2xml, msh1xml, ps2xml, ps1xml, mshxml, gadget, mhtml, psc2, psc1, msh2,msh1, aspx, xml, wsh, wsf, wsc, vsw, vst, vss, vbs, vbe, url, tmp, shs, shb, sct, scr, scf, reg, pst, ps2, ps1, prg, prf, plg, pif, pcd, ops, mst, msp, msi, msh, msc, mht, mdz, mdw, mdt, mde, mdb, mda, maw, mav, mau, mat, mas, mar, maq, mam, mag, maf, mad, lnk, ksh, jse, its, isp, ins, inf, htc, hta, hlp, fxp, exe, der, csh, crt, cpl, com, cmd, chm, cer, bat, bas, asx, asp, app, adp, ade, ws, vb, js

Solution
Change the Outlook Web App mailbox policy to include and exclude the file types that you want.
The following is an example of the Windows PowerShell commands to remove the .xml file type from the BlockedFileTypes and BlockedMimeTypes lists and add it to the AllowedFileTypes and AllowedMimeTypes lists:

Things to consider:
- It may take several minutes before changes to the Outlook Web App policy take effect.
- Be aware that by changing the Outlook Web App mailbox policy to include file types that are blocked by default, you may make your system more vulnerable to security threats.
Workaround
Direct users to compress the files that they intend to send (for example, as a .zip file) and then send the compressed files as attachments.
