Nov 22, 2018 You all have been pressuring me to bring back some form of Sim Sunday so today (Thanksgiving (USA)) I went looking at different simulators. First, I just checked Steam to see what they had, then I checked in on RealFlight (OMG) and then I went over to the Phoenix Rc site and the image below. May 08, 2019 The RC flight simulator experience is the next best thing to being in the actual pilot’s seat. Sims have always been exhilarating, but nothing compares to the training systems of today. The modern ones offer flight training for a variety of aircraft. They can include planes, helicopters, gliders, drones, and any other bird.
Our Top RC Plane Simulators (Our Reviews)
Finding just one plane to class as the best plane simulator was near impossible. But here we have two that we think are really cool and will provide you with hours and hours of fun. We have gone with two of the top brands. We have a RealFlight RC Simulator review and a Phoenix RC Simulator Review. We will have a look at what we like, don’t like and then we will put them together at the end in an all out battle to the death…… or we will just tell you what one we like the best.
Great Planes RealFlight 7.5 Flight Simulator review
RealFlight are one of the most well known when it comes to RC Plane simulators.
Actually this one lets you fly drones and helicopters as well so you do get a full on experience. In all there are 140 different aircrafts for you to make use of so there is a lot of choice. Each one has its own little quirks that makes flying them all worth doing. You also have 40 different areas to fly. When we started our RealFlight RC Simulator review one of the things that caught our eye was the Reset/Rewind feature. This means that if you are trying to fly properly and mess up, you can hit a rewind button to try and fix what you did wrong. This is a great feature that is sure to help you avoid mistakes in the future.
The actual controller you get is really cool and has all that you would get on an actual RC plane controller. You have everything you need at your fingertips and that we feel is really cool. Also this has plenty of games for you to play which while fun, do actually help you learn how to fly properly. One thing we will say is that this does require a pretty decent computer to get the best out of it.
Pros:
- Has lots of planes and other vehicles to use
- Some great areas to fly
- Has games to play
- Controller feels fantastic
Cons:
- Requires a pretty good computer
- Is one of the higher priced RC plane simulators.
Phoenix R/C Pro Simulator V5.0 review
Let us start our Phoenix RC Simulator Review by giving them a big thumbs up for being great with free updates to their software. This is a great and rather low cost way to see if you have what it takes to fly a real RC plane. Actually drones and helicopters are included here as well so you can also have some fun with those. One of the things that many people love about the Phoenix RC Plane Simulator is how Phoenix have an exclusive deal with Horizon Hobby. So they are able to include many of their aircrafts in the game. So you could go from flying on here to flying one in real life if you get good enough. Also this simulator is great if you do not have the world’s most powerful PC as it is seems to run good on even less powerful ones.
We really like what Phoenix have done here, but we have read reports of a few bugs here and there in the software. Now to their credit, Phoenix are great at taking care of these, but sometimes when they fix one another can pop up. This is the case with most computer software so we cannot fault them too much for this.
Pros:
- Very fair price
- Features exclusive Horizon Hobbes planes
- Does not require a super powerful PC
- Frequent updates
Cons:
- Not as much as you get with some other RC flight simulators
- Has been known to have a few bugs that need fixing
RealFlight RC Flight Simulator VS Phoenix RC Flight Simulator
There has not been a battle like this since King Kong took on Godzilla! In all seriousness this is actually quite easy for us. While some people may get a real kick out of the Phoenix RC Flight Simulator having Horizon Hobbies products in it. While you could see from our Phoenix RC Simulator Review that we did like it. We feel that as good as it is, especially considering the price and frequent updates. We just feel that the RealFlight RC Plane Simulator gives you a bit more. As you could see from our RealFlight RC Simulator review, they have jam packed a ton of stuff into their software and we were really impressed with the rewind feature that they had. It may cost a little more and require a decent PC, but we feel it is the better of the two….. only just.
Things To Look For When Buying An RC Plane Simulator
Can Your Computer Handle It?
This right here is the big one. You have to make sure that your PC is able to handle the RC flight simulator that you are interested in. Most of the time it is very easy to find out as the website you are looking at will tell you what the minimum requirements for the flight simulator are. If you purchase one, open it up try it out and find that your PC is not able to run it then you might find that where you bought it from will not allow you to return it!
This Is More Than Just A Video Game!
We know that this is the best way to test out if RC plane simulators are for you. Well unless you have a buddy who is made enough to let you loose with theirs. But some people make the mistake of not taking the time to learn how to properly fly an RC plane and just use this like a video game. Making all kinds of crazy moves, crashing into the ground and then having a good laugh about it. Which you can as there is no consequences for your actions. But you must remember that while fun, this is a learning tool to get you ready for the real thing!
Do You Want A Strictly Simulator Experience Or Do You Want Fun?
This ties into what we said before as when looking for the best RC plane simulator. One thing we found was that some do offer a good mix of realistic flying action along with some games that you can have fun with. If you want a bit of both then picking a RC flight simulator is much easier for you. But if you want just a straight realistic approach be sure to look for one that offers mainly that.
Do They Offer Free Updates?
We noticed that some RC flight simulators made it a point to mention that they will update the software. Be it with new planes and other flying contraptions to have fun with, some new games, new courses and just little tweaks to make the experience better. Some will offer these updates for free and some will not. So be sure to have a good look at who has a reputation for regular and free updates.
Do I Get Everything I Need In The Box?
The answer to this in most cases is a big fat yes. But this ties into our first point in making sure that your PC can run the game. Do you have enough USB ports? Do you have the right kind of PC ports. Buying some kind of USB adapter is not very expensive, but you want to make sure that you have all you need before your RC plane arrives.
So Is A RC Plane Simulator Right For Me?
We feel that getting a RC plane before a real one is a great ideal. In the long run you could save yourself a lot of money. Not just that, but you can save yourself a lot of headaches as well as flying a real one can be very tricky to get into. This lets you see what it is like, without the risk of a real crash. While it was hard to pick one as the best RC plane simulator. We do think that both of these offer a lot of fun and do a good job in showing you what RC flying is like.
